Description

The courses included in this catalog are statutorily mandated trainings under OAC 109:2-1-13 – (A)1-5. These courses must be completed by: 1) all Ohio peace officers who completed their peace officer basic training prior to dates set forth in OAC 109-2-13 (B)(C)(D)(E)(F); 2) state highway patrol troopers seeking appointment as peace officers; or 3) out-of-state peace officers attempting to obtain a peace officer appointment in Ohio. The peace officer basic academy curriculum has been continuously updated to include the mandated content in current basic academies. Officers who successfully completed a OPOTC approved basic academy on or after dates set forth in the OAC, are not required to complete these courses. If a course has received a substantial update to its content, the date of the update is reflected in the course description (i.e. “Updated March 2021”).

Courses
This course raises officer awareness of human trafficking, specifically the scope of human trafficking, including in Ohio; the characteristics of traffickers and victims; and the criminal statutes and resources that help protect trafficking victims.
This course will cover the definitions of an abused child, general characteristics of physical abuse, behaviors observed of emotional abuse, and the characteristics of sexual abuse, including the characteristics of sexually abusive parent. *Please note that this course contains no audio.*
There are approximately 77.8 million dogs owned in the United States and are likely to be encountered in 44% of residential locations. This course will define what a companion animal is, the statutory elements of animal cruelty, and the penalties. Officers will be presented various options in handling a threat from a companion animal and how to respond to a dog-related incident. *Please note that this course contains limited audio.*
Updated October 2021: This course deals specifically with the use of interpersonal and communication skills to effectively and sensitively interview a victim/survivor of rape as required by the Ohio Revised Code Chapter 2907. It includes educational tools provided that may assist the officer in reducing trauma to the victims/survivors and the investigating officer. Completing this course earns you 1 credit (hour).
Updated December 2021: You must complete the Ohio Domestic Violence Laws, Ohio Protection Orders, and Ohio Stalking Laws modules to receive the certificate for the Domestic Violence Legal Updates course. Completing this course earns you 4 credits (hours).
Ohio possesses a legislative mandate for training in the cases of missing children, and this course fulfills that mandate. Specifically, the course outlines the 12 responsibilities of a law enforcement agency in missing child cases. *Please note that this course contains limited audio.*
There are over 50,000 cases of missing adults in the U.S., and it’s now the law that law enforcement agencies comply with reporting requirements. This course covers those legal requirements as well as definitions and categories of missing persons. *Please note that this course contains limited audio.*
